Jeff Iwanicki, 46, a graphic arts teacher at Fairfield Warde High School, was acquitted of charges that included multiple counts of impairing the morals of a minor, public indecency and breach of peace. He reportedly burst into tears when the not guilty verdict was read on Monday in court.
The jury returned the verdict in less than an hour. According to the Connecticut Post, Iwanicki’s supporters - many of whom were his fellow teachers - burst into applause when the verdict was returned. Iwanicki had vehemently denied the charges since they were levied against him.
The trial came following Iwanicki’s arrest for allegedly exposing himself to a 15-year-old student on Nov. 2 and Dec. 6, 2016 in a multipurpose room at the school, police said. There was no romantic relationship between Iwanicki, a Milford resident who was listed as a technical education teacher at Warde's Townsend House, and the student.
Police noted that there was no alleged physical contact between Iwanicki and the student. Despite the charges, Iwanicki kept his job. The complaint against Iwanicki came days after he reprimanded the student for skipping classes and threatened to bring it up with the dean.
